摄政王是在一个
国家的君主未能管理
国家时，代替君主处理国政者。在实行君主制的
国家，摄政王通常在君主仍然幼小、患病、或不在国内等情况下执行职务。摄政王大多由在位君主的继承
人，如王子，或由君主的兄弟姊妹、母亲、甚至外祖父等外戚担任。
